Eydon looks done and dusted at Newmarket

3 minute read

Eydon could be the one to keep an eye on in an open-looking bet365 Feilden Stakes which headlines the final day of Newmarket’s Craven meeting.

Although still a maiden, it is of note that Roger Varian is keen to pitch the son of Olden Times in at Listed level as he looks to build the colt into a Classic contender. To add further spice to the mix, his sire won this race for owner Prince Faisal as a maiden in 2001.

An eyecatching third on debut at Newcastle in December, Eydon was beaten a short head when sent off at odds-on on his return to the north east in February. However, he was unlucky to be mugged on the line on that occasion and showed a willing attitude when pressed in the closing stages.

That effort should have taught him plenty about racing and the extra furlong of this contest can play to his advantage.

John and Thady Gosden's Audience can take the bet365 British EBF Conditions Stakes on just his second career start. The mount of Frankie Dettori was an impressive winner over track and trip on debut in October and is a half-brother to Group Three winner Dark Lady, also owned by Cheveley Park Stud.

Elsewhere at HQ, Hortzadar looks for compensation in the Pat Smullen Memorial Handicap following his near miss at Redcar last time and could take plenty of beating off the same mark, while Robert Cowell saddles four in the concluding Price Promise At bet365 Handicap, where recent Newcastle scorer Faustus could be the pick of his quartet.

The Glancing Queen can get back on track in the Stay In The Montpellier Town House Mares' Handicap Chase that features on Cheltenham's all-mares card.

The eight-year-old was sent off at 4-1 for the Plate at the Cheltenham Festival on the back of a fine performance when second to L'homme Presse in the 'Dipper' on New Year's Day and was in the process of running another big race before an untidy jump at the second-last put paid to her chances.

The New course at Prestbury Park clearly suits Alan King's mare, who has some smart form figures at the Gloucestershire track and she can take advantage of a mark of 140 here at the expense of Paul Nicholls' consistent, yet rare winner, Cut The Mustard.

Addosh and Ile De Jersey recommence battle in the Grade Three Jersey Junior Jumpers Membership Fillies' Juvenile Handicap Hurdle.

Stuart Edmunds' youngster got the better of the argument following wind surgery when they met at Huntingdon last month, but the latter was conceding a double penalty to the winner on that occasion and is much better off at the weights this time around as both make a first foray into the handicap ranks.

Addosh had too much speed for Nicky Henderson's French import at Huntingdon, but that is unlikely to have the same impact on the result here with both tackling the stiff finish of the Cheltenham hill.

Richard Fahey has won the "Cock O' The North" Handicap that features on Ripon's first meeting of the summer three times since 2015 and has a great chance of doing so again with Blenheim Boy.

Lightly raced at two, he was brought to the boil perfectly at York in the latter stages of the season and could take plenty of beating on handicap debut now upped to a mile.

Also at Ripon, Philip Kirby's Skycutter reverts back to the Flat in the Ripon Silver Bowl Handicap having acquitted himself well over timber in the winter months.

He was deemed good enough to run in both Grade One company and at the Cheltenham Festival over obstacles and now returns to the level off the same mark as when fourth in the November Handicap.
