202 lots are on offer at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale, which will take place between Monday 17th and Wednesday 19th of April at Newmarket on the Rowley Mile. The sale is likely to be popular after unprecedented success in 2022, with Irish 2000 Guineas (G1) winner Native Trail and 1000 Guineas (G1) heroine representing horses purchased from the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale.

The £250,000 Tattersalls Craven Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus has been renewed for 2023. £100,000 will be paid to the owner of the first horse to win any of the six juvenile races at Royal Ascot, with the vendor receiving £25,000. The same bonus will apply to the first Craven Breeze-Up horse to win any of the fifteen European Group One races which are open to two-year-olds, including the all-age Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) and Prix de l'Abbaye (G1). In 2021, the Charlie Appleby-trained Native Trail collected the inaugural bonus, winning the National Stakes (G1) at the Curragh. He was a 210,000 guineas purchase at the Craven Breeze-Up Sales. Prospective buyers can also benefit from the £15,000 Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Bonus, given to participating owners whose purchase wins a Class 2, 3 or 4 two-year-old Maiden or Novice race in Britain or an 'Open' two-year-old Maiden in Ireland.

With the catalogue including thirty full or half brothers or sisters to Group and Listed winners, there are well-bred colts and fillies on display over the coming days. We look at ten lots to watch out for:

Lot 2 – Mehmas/Obama Rule

 Offspring of proven broodmares are always going to popular and this bay colt by Mehmas fits the bill. He is out of Group Three winning mare Obama Rule (Danehill Dancer) who has produced two winners from five runners. Her best progeny to date has been Insinuendo (Gleneagles), victorious in the Kilboy Estates Stakes (G2) at the Curragh. The use of stallion Mehmas is an injection of speed into the pedigree which has so far produced mile to middle distance performers.

Lot 9 – Equiano/Persario

Consigned by Glending Stables, Lot 9 is expected to show plenty of speed as a full brother to Group One winning sprinter The Tin Man. Dam Persario (Bishop of Cashel) has produced nine winners including Deacon Blues (Compton Place) who was crowned Champion Older Sprinter in Europe in 2011 after winning multiple Group races. The majority of her progeny have not won as a juvenile, so this bay colt is likely to be a longer-term prospect for the sprinting division.

 Lot 38 – Territories/Roger Sez

For prospective purchasers with an eye on the bonuses offered by Tattersalls for the Craven Breeze-Up Sale, this Territories filly could fulfil the criteria. She is a half-sister to Lezoo (Zoustar), who won the Cheveley Park Stakes (G1) and Princess Margaret Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot in 2022. The dam Roger Sez (Red Clubs) was a Listed winner at two and has plenty of speed in her pedigree.

Lot 58 – Showcasing/Sorella Bella

This colt has the potential to be seen on the track early as a son of precocious sprinter Showcasing and Italian Champion Two-Year-Old Sorella Bella (Clodovil). Sorella Bella won the Listed Premio Coolmore in Milan and was placed eleven times, including a second in the Premio Gran Criterium (G1). Desert Lion (Lope de Vega) is the best of her two raced offspring, producing six victories in the UK and abroad.

Lot 63 – Kingman/Stellar Path

Group Three winner Stellar Path (Astronomer Royal) has made a strong start to her broodmare career with three winners from four runners, including Lose Yourself (Lope de Vega), who finished second in the Oh So Sharp Stakes (G2). The pairing of Stellar Path with a stallion boasting a Green Desert sire-line has already produced a winner in Astral Path (Muharaar) and it would be fair to say that the use of Kingman is an upgrade on that pairing.

Lot 106 – Medaglia d'Or/Belvoir Bay

This bay colt is a first foal out of Breeder's Cup Turf Sprint (G1) winner Belvoir Bay (Equiano) with sire Territories producing a good ratio of Stakes performers for his £10,000 fee. The dam boasts a maternal bloodline full of juvenile winners including Cherry Hinton (G2) winner Please Sing (Royal Applause) and further back, Champion Two-Year-Old in France, Bold Arrangement (Persian Bold).

Lot 151 – Kingman/Fleche d'Or

 Half-brother to Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) and Derby Stakes (G1) hero Golden Horn (Cape Cross), Lot 151 is likely to draw plenty of attention as a Classic prospect and future sire. This colt is bred along similar lines to his illustrious half-brother with Green Desert featuring in the sire-line. It is also worth noting that this cross has already seen success – the colt's half-sister Eastern Belle (Champs Elysees) produced a Kingman colt named Megallan, who was a multiple Group Three winner.

Lot 162 – Night of Thunder/Guana

Sire Night of Thunder has been very popular in his first few years at stud and this trend looks set to continue into 2023. This filly out of Guana (Dark Angel) is a half-sister to Group Three winning juvenile Rumble Inthejungle (Bungle Inthejungle) and Group placed Great Prospector (Elzaam), who demonstrated longevity by winning nine races between the ages of two and seven. She looks ideal for a juvenile campaign with potential for improvement with age.

Lot 185 – Ten Sovereigns/Leala

First-season sire Ten Sovereigns is expected to make an impact in his freshman year and this bay colt could be one of his juvenile winners, making him an excellent prospect for the £15,000 Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Bonus. The unraced dam Leala (Montjeu) comes from an American bloodline jam-packed with Black Type and has already produced Breeder's Cup Turf Sprint (G1) winner Obviously (Choisir), who recorded numerous Graded wins in the USA.

Lot 192 – Blue Point/Madeline

Blue Point is touted as a potential Champion First-Season Sire and this colt could contribute to his tally. He is the second foal out of Madeline (Kodiac), winner of the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury and placed in the Cheveley Park Stakes (G1). The first foal (Lope de Vega) is yet to reach the racetrack, but the family holds plenty of Black Type over a variety of different distances.
