Vicki Gibbins' Horse Racing Tips Today

3 minute read

There are selections from three different tracks in today’s tips and after two close calls yesterday, we are chasing that elusive winner…

Our first selection comes in the 3m2f Class 4 Newton Abbot Racecourse On Facebook Handicap Chase (3:00) at Newton Abbot. Joe Tizzard's Investment Manager recorded an easy nineteen length success at Exeter in April before struggling to get involved at this track three weeks ago. Although the trainer was asked for an explanation as to the horse's poor run, it seemed clear that a jumping error at the fifth had knocked Investment Manager's confidence. He dropped to the rear and passed two tiring rivals for a well-beaten fifth on seven.

Blinkers have been applied for the first time to sharpen the horse up and his previous winning form at the track over hurdles is another positive.

For our second selection, we switch to the Flat at Newbury for the 6f Class 5 Make Your Best Bet At BetVictor Restricted Maiden Fillies' Stakes (2:00). With Amo Racing's promising filly Mapmaker backed into favouritism, there is potentially some juice about the price of Rod Millman's Shaws Phoenix. She did everything wrong on debut at Bath when showing considerable signs of inexperience.

The Phoenix of Spain filly had to be pushed along from the start when she became detached, then switched around when encountering traffic in the final two furlongs before making considerable ground in the closing stages to finish third. The winner Haatem has since given the form a boost by finishing a good third in the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom Downs on Saturday despite being slowly away from the stalls.

We switch to Nottingham for our third selection and take a risk on a debutante in the 5f Class 5 British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes. Richard Fahey's juveniles are in excellent form at the moment and boast a 23% strike rate this season (7-31).

Out of a half-sister to Black Type performers Windhoek and Queen Kahlua, Ziggy's Queen caught the attention of many at the Arqana Breeze-Up Sales a couple of weeks ago and was sold to Middleham Park Racing for 200,000 euros. With the backing of a yard in-form, the Invincible Spirit filly is expected to make an impact on debut with Oisin Orr aboard.
