Ayr hosts eight races on soft ground this afternoon and Hortzadar should have every chance of following up his recent course and distance success in the Virgin Bet Apprentice Handicap (1.42).

David O'Meara's charge has been steadily coming down the handicap this season and duly took advantage of his first outing in Class 5 company when coming home strongly for a clearcut track and trip victory twelve days ago.

A 3lb rise in the weights for that effort looks more than fair and a current mark of 76 leaves him still feasibly treated. You only have to go back to the beginning of last year to find the O'Meara-trained gelding being competitive off marks in the low 90s and with conditions to suit, he should take some stopping under experienced apprentice Mark Winn.

Selection: Hortzadar – General 5/2

We head to Wolverhampton for our final two wagers. I'm not at all surprised to see Amroon head the market in the Follow AtTheRaces On Twitter Nursery Handicap at 5.00 but at the prices, I'd much rather take a chance on Ludberg each-way.

Charlie Wallis wouldn't be renowned for having two-year-old winners, but this gelded son of Territories has shown more than enough in three outings to date to suggest he could be competitive off this opening mark.

Ludberg left his debut effort well behind when beaten just under five lengths, albeit he did finish last of five, in a Brighton novice event last month and he once again bettered that effort when third of four in a minor Bath maiden a few weeks later.

He produced an RPR of 55 that day and although he probably needs to improve a touch, there's every chance that's possible on his all-weather and handicap debut. The cheaply purchased gelding has shown plenty of pace in his last two outings and from a good draw in stall three, he looks a generous price at around the 14/1 mark.

Selection: Ludberg – General 14/1

Flatley caught the eye when running on strongly from a somewhat terrible position over course and distance eight days ago and he's taken to gain compensation in the Download The At The Races App Handicap (7.00).

If you watch all-weather racing on a regular basis, then you'll know Flatley has to be ridden with some degree of confidence and is often held up following a tardy beginning. A combination of those factors was certainly his undoing here last week when he was unable to reel in the reopposing Surprise Picture, who got the run of the race by setting steady fractions off the front end.

However, there looks to be a bit more pace on this evening with the likes of Cannon Glory and Dynamite Katie, who's fitted with a first-time hood, both likely to push the previously mentioned winner for the early lead.

That should help Flatley who will no doubt be dropped in from stall nine and with a bit more luck onside this evening, I'm hopeful he can mow down his rivals late on to record a second course and distance success.
