JPR One produced a clean round of jumping to land the Grade 2 Lightning Novices’ Chase at Lingfield on Sunday, capitalising on the early exit of favourite Djelo.

The Joe Tizzard-trained gelding had made a successful start to his chasing career when winning at Newton Abbot, and was comfortably in control when unseating at the final fence at Cheltenham during the November Meeting. Although he produced a fair third in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Chase at Sandown subsequently, the gelding struggled in attritional conditions and connections hoped a return to better ground would see an improved performance.

There was early drama at the first fence as leader Matata jumped dramatically left, effectively bringing down Djelo and blocking the run of Master Chewey. Although Matata continued to drift left at the early fences, jockey Daryl Jacob remained in control at the front with his jumping improving as the race went on. Joe Tizzard's JPR One came alongside the long-term leader at the third-last fence, cruising into contention with an excellent jumping performance. Although jockey Brendan Powell appeared to have plenty in hand approaching the line, there was a moment of concern as JPR One idled in front, allowing Matata to get within a length for second.

In an interview with ITV Racing, jockey Brendan Powell said: "We got very lucky at the first because we nearly got wiped out as well but it all went smoothly. He did get a little bit keen halfway round and I was worried he was doing too much, the ground is hard enough work but I was able to fill him up when and where I could. His jumping was brilliant again and it's nice when it works out. He was getting a little bit tired [at the end] but I was pretty sure I had the race in the bag."

Paddy Power shortened JPR One from 50/1 to 16/1 for the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
