War Of Will On The Road To Kentucky Derby

3 minute read

The Mark Casse-trained 3YO War Of Will kept his unbeaten record on dirt intact with another powerful performance to win Sunday's G2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

The Risen Star victory was War Of Will third successive win on dirt and gave him 50 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in May.

Casse said that the G2 Louisiana Derby on March 23 would be the likely next target for War Of Will.

War of Will was second in the GI Summer Stakes and fifth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf before he was switched to the dirt tracks.

In The Risen Star he stalked the leader in second then kicked for home to score by 2 1/4 lengths.

“For a big horse he has tremendous speed,” Casse said.

“He had to hit the gas a little so that got him a little riled up.

“If he keeps winning there will be some big targets for him to chase.”
