This year's renewal looks a little different at Golden Gate Fields, as the spectator-free racetrack sits side-by-side a pop-up Covid vaccination site. But as ever, this race - Golden Gate Fields' biggest winter event - will be offering up 10 points to the winner in the search for Kentucky Derby qualification.
An important Derby qualifier since the 1980s, the 1m 1/8 race's star had waned a little in the last decade, but has an extremely competitive looking field in 2021 thanks in part to the fact that not only does it give valuable qualification points to the Derby but for the third straight year, the victor of the El Camino Real Derby will be granted a free berth into the second leg of the Triple Crown, The Preakness Stakes, at Pimlico Racecourse in Mid-May.
The horse everyone is most excited to see is Rombauer, who finished second in the 2020 Grade I American Pharoah Stakes in September at Santa Anita. Michael Mccarthy trains the son of Twirling Candy, whose lone win came last summer at Del Mar in a maiden race.
