Weather dampens Goodwood Day 1

3 minute read

The well-prepared course was not prepared for an extra 100ml that fell on it overnight.

This resulted in a number of scratchings, the most notable of which was Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup.  Spanish Mission was also scratched, leaving the coast clear for Trueshan who won from Away He Goes and Sir Ron Priestly.  Unfortunately for connections Sir Ron aggravated an old suspensory injury as trainer Mark Johnson said it is not life threatening but could be career threatening.

The win was part of a treble on the day for Hollie Doyle.

Dark Angel's progeny ran the quinella in the Vintage Stakes with Angel Bleu getting the verdict over Berkshire Shadow.  Austrian Theory was third, and Lusail was a non-runner.

The Lennox saw Kinross run out an impressive winner in a very tight 4-way finish.  Creative Force was a neck away second and then a head to Happy Power 16/1 and Space Blues a neck away in fourth.

Goodwood Wednesday

The weather is looking better and the sun may even appear.

The course is still rated soft and there may not be enough sun for it to dry out.

The Oak Tree is G3 for f&m over 1400m and at present 16 are set to run.  Charlie Fellowes saddles two likely contenders Onassis, with Hayley Turner riding and Vadream with Jamie Spencer.  Both are around the 6/1 price.  Bounce The Blues is on a similar mark for Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy and we are quite fond of Valeria Messalina who is on 13/2 for Jessica Harrington and Shane Foley.

The Molecomb is over 1000m for the 2yos and 11 scheduled to run.  Havana Gold's offspring occupy the first two places in the market with Fearly on 7/4 and Chipotle 10/3.  Nymphadora, by No Nay Never, was scratched from Ascot the other day when the ground was too hard and the ground here certainly is not that so we like her on 10/1 for Balding-Murphy.

The Sussex Stakes G1 over 1600m sees Jim Bolger's Poetic Flare has had 5 starts this prep and won 3 of them.  Kevin Manning as usual rides and they are 5/4. Alcohol Free is racing very well and is on 4/1, the lovely Snow Lantern 9/2 and we think Order of Australia is big value on 14/1.
