Ascot Friday

3 minute read

Friday's festivities start with the G3 Albany Stakes for the 2yo fillies with 18 of them due to run on a track where the going is good to firm.

The O'Brien runners Just Wonderful 9/4 and Fairyland 7/2 head the market and then it's down to 5/1 for Main Edition for Mark Johnston with James Doyle on board. Our trainer friend Gina Rarick has brought Réponse Exacte over from Maisons Lafitte and at 25/1 she is worth a little support on an e/w basis. Oisin Murphy has been booked for the ride.

The Edward VII is over 2000m and for this 3yo geldings can run as well as the colts. There's only 9 runners and Aidan O'Brien saddles 3 of them - Delano Roosevelt 3/1, Giuseppe Garibaldi 7/1 and Rostropovich also 7/1. Charlie Appleby is challenging them with Old Persian who is on 9/2 with William Buick on board. Another interesting runner is The Queen's Elector with James McDonald wearing the royal colours and 10/1 worthy of support.

The Commonwealth Cup os over 1200m and has a field of 22 runners. James McDonald has another great ride here as he's on Equilateral who was an impressive Doncaster winner and is on 4/1 together with the Phoenix winner Sioux Nation. After that the field is wide open with Sands of Mali on 8/1, Eqtidaar 11/1 and American raider Gidu hails from Todd Pletcher's barn and is on 33/1.

The Coronation Stakes G1 over 1600m is for 3yo fillies and there are 13 of them in a very open race. You can argue that 7/2 is a bit skinny for Alpha Centauri and for Clemmie but they will have their supporters - as those two have recent Irish form keep an eye on the betting. We like Threading with William Buick riding for Mark Johnston and French raider Coeur de Beaute sports the Sunday Racing colors and is on 10/1.
