The Everest and the weekend for the Internationals

3 minute read

There was an even bigger crowd at Randwick for the second running of the Everest, with the rain coming just at the wrong time.

But nothing was going to trouble Redzel, last year's winner, who went to the front and went on with the job.

Trapeze Artist was the best of the followers taking second but was upstaged by Tommy Berry on Osborne Bulls, the last horse to get into the race. Berry took the Godolphin rep out to the stand side rail and they found the best ground and came solidly home to take the third.

US Navy Flag was never going to be happy on a heavy 9 especially after the rain that preceded the race and he wasn't given any favours by Ryan Moore going to the inside rail where the ground was very cut up.

But we have to put in a very sad report here and that is the Charlie Appleby trained Hamada had to be put down after a trackwork accident at Werribee yesterday. He was a horse that had a serious chance in the Melbourne Cup and must be very upsetting for all the crew at the stables both in Australia and at home in Newmarket.

At Caulfield there were three O'Briens in the Schillaci stakes with Spirit of Valor running a very eye-catching second to Ball of Muscle.

In the Ladbroke Stakes the two Godolphin stables were represented by Benbatl from Saeed bin Suroor's yard and Blair House from Charlie Appleby who ran a tight 1-2 in this G1 over the 2000m.

Benbatl is supposed to be heading to the Cox Plate and an encounter from Winx.

And Aidan O'Brien's Yucatan with James Doyle riding won the Herbert Power G2 over 2400m.
