Whistlejcket's (very) rough guide to the Cup

3 minute read

There are several things that are needed in a Melbourne Cup winner and the number one of these is luck.

However there are some stats which winners have in common and we will apply these mostly to the Internationals who are recent or fairly recent arrivals.

• 6 years old bay entire: Marmelo

• Weight: average winning weight 54.5 kgs - will be carried by Avilius

• Name initial – T followed by M and S – Thecliffsofmoher, Magic Circle, Marmelo, Muntahaa, Sound Check

• Gate 11 – Avilius

• Saddlecloth numbers between 4 and 12 – Chestnut Coat, Muntahaa, Sound Check,

Who Shot the Barman, Ace High, Marmelo, Avilius, Yucatan, Auvray.

• (a) Has run over the 3200m trip or longer and (b) in a G1 and (c) has won. (a) Who Shot The Barman, Magic Circle, Chestnut Coat, Sound Check, Marmelo, Auvray, Red Cardinal, Ventura Storm, A Prince of Arran, Nakeeta, Sir Charles Road, Zacada, Runaway.

(b) Magic Circle, Sound Check, Who Shot The Barman, Marmelo (3000m x 2), Auvray (long time back), A Prince of Arran

(c) Who Shot The Barman

• Done OK in the wet: Thecliffsofmoher, Magic Circle, Sound Check, Ventura Storm, Youngstar and Rostropovich.

Giving horses a point for each time they get a mention above:

Marmelo – 5

Sound Check – 5

Magic Circle – 4

Who Shot The Barman - 4

Avilius – 3

Muntahaa – 2

Thecliffsofmoher -2

These could change if the heavens don't open and the track is fast. And don't forget that Who Shot the Barman, who has age against him, is the only winner of a 3200+ G1 and that was this year!
