Stelvio wins Kyoto Mile

3 minute read

Ridden by visiting English jockey William Buick, the 3yo son of Lord Kanaloa showed a great turn of foot to win the G1.

He had a real battle with last year's winner Persian Knight, with the verdict in the end being just a head. Then there was another battle for third spot which went in the end to Al Ain by a neck to the 3yo son of Deep Impact Katsuji who had started on 231.1, and another neck to Mikki Glory.

Favourite Mozu Ascot was disappointing and the filly Aerolithe was in it for a bit but got swamped coming into the final stages.

Next Sunday is the big one - the Japan Cup. The two overseas runners Capri and Thundering Blue have arrived and seem to be settling in well. The question is can Almond Eye do what her fellow triple tiara winner Gentildonna do and win as a 3yo?
