Another death at Santa Anita and cry for reform

3 minute read

"Horse racing needs to aggressively pursue a series of changes to how it is regulated."

The US Jockey Club has published a white paper in connection with a bill that they are proposing to Congress - H.R.1704 - The Horseracing Integrity Act of 2019.

It is well worth reading for people interested in American racing and what it has become over recent years and can be found at www.jockeyclub.com/pdfs/vision_2025.pdf.

They consider that if it is to prosper, horse racing need comprehensive reforms and to be brought more into line with the International Federation of Horseracing Associations rules. This is particularly in the field of medications which can be available to US horses up to the day before racing (most jurisdictions require at least 6 days clear) and in particular the use of lasix.

It is interesting in respect to the latter med that the US horses in Dubai managed to run well without the use of lasix and survived.
