Absences and upsets at Ayr

3 minute read

With the ground being classified as good and riders in the first couple of races stating they thought good to firm, there was a rush of scratchings.

This particularly impacted on the Scottish Grand National where 5 horses, including two of the favourites Beware the Bear and Dingo Dollar, were withdrawn. That left the field clear for a very open field which went in the end to Takingrisks 25/1 from Crosspark 10/1 with Cloth Cap 9/1 third and Blue Fight 25/1 fourth. Only runner in single figures to feature in the top 5 was Big River on 8/1 and favourite Vintage Clouds was sixth,

The Scottish Champiion Hurdle went without Mister Fisher and saw Verdana Blue start favourite at 4/1 and set a new course record with the win. Dino Velvet was second on 14/1, Equus Amadeus third on 16/1 and Irish Roe fourth on 25/1. Our pick Leoncavallo was 5th.

The Future Champions went to Secret Investor from Louis' Vac Pouch and Monbeg Leged. Vinndication and Drinks Interval didn't run.

At Newbury Marmelo won the John Porter in his first run since his second in the Melbourne Cup. On that day he was ridden by Hugh Bowman, who was otherwise engaged on Saturday! Aspetar was second, Laraaib third and last year's winner Defoe could only manage fourth.

The Fred Darling saw a good run from Dandhu to defeat Iconic Choice and the O'Brien runner So Perfect, by Scat Daddy, chosing to run here instead of Naas.

The Greenham went to the Marcus Tregoning trained Mohaather, who looks like he could go up in trip to the mile and a run in the Guineas. Great Scot who was second has already run the mile and could also head to the Guineas. Urban Icon took third ahead of Hello Youmzain with the fav Boitron fifth.
