Not how you run but where

3 minute read

The 2000 Guineas at Newmarket was a race where there was a great advantage to horses running up the stand side.

This led to Magna Grecia winning and King of Change 66/1 coming second with Skardu the best of the runners in the middle of the track taking third.  Ten Sovereigns was in the bunch coming up the centre of the track and finished fifth, despite some valiant efforts to improve his position.

The day started off with a win for The Queen’s horse Elector in the Spring Lodge Stakes, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Joe Fanning.

The Zoustar Palace House Stakes was a win for Mab’s Cross who got the victory by a neck from Equilateral 11/2 with Major Jumbo finishing third  ahead of favourite Sergei Prokofiev.

The Roaring Lion Jockey Club Stakes went to Communique for Mark Johnston and Silvestre de Sousa by 1 1’4 lengths from Defoe.  Mildenberger was third on 13/2 and favorite Coronet only fourth.  Red Verdon was fifth.

Sunday’s 1000 Guineas has the Dahlia G2 for f&m over 1800m.  There are 6 starters here in a race that allows for 25.  Where are all the horses?  For those who have bothered to turn up, Sir Michael Stoute’s Veracious is on 6/5 and Billesden  Brook 3/1.  Veracious defeated Billesdon Brook at Goodwood in a past meeting.

The 1000 Guineas is also over 1600 so it will be interesting to see where the jockeys choose to run.  Quabala is on 3/1 for Roger Varian and David Egan but we like Just Wondeful on 11/2 for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore.  Iridessa is 6/1 and our roughie is Hermosa on 20/1 for O’Brien (AP) and Wayne Lordan.
