Preakness 2019

3 minute read

There is of course no triple crown this year and none of the first four over the line in the Kentucky Derby are here.

Only four survivors of that mud fest line up in the field of 13.  Bob Baffert saddle Improbable as he goes for his 7th Preakness.  Mike Smith has the ride and they are 5/2 in the Morning Line.  War of Will, the horse that arguably was disadvantaged in the Derby is 4/1 but we thought he recovered well enough but didn’t have the finish to get better than where he eventually finished.

Anothertwistafate brings fresh legs into this and has the best jockey in North America on board in Jose Ortiz which make his 6/1 an attractive price.  While Win Win Win ran in the Derby he did nothing apparently because he hated the track, for which we don’t blame him.  So despite his car park draw his 15/1 quote may see a little of our each/way hard earned head in his direction.

There is no strong favourite here and quite a few arguments made for about half the field so we suggest multiples around the four mentioned above.

On Friday the fillies go round in the Black Eyed Susan which looks to be between Point of Honour on 5/2 and Cookie Dough 3/1.  Not much between them, and Always Shopping on 4/1 could also go in.

Saturday’s undercard has the Gr 2 Dixie Stakes over 1800m on the turf.  Catholic Boy is on top of the market on 3/1,  Inspector Lynley 7/2 and Have At It on 6/1.  Could be interesting.
