Phoenix of Spain win Irish 2000 Guineas

3 minute read

The fact that it was supposed to be a match race between Too Darn Hot and Magna Grecia was totally ignored by Charlie Hills’s Phoenix of Spain.

He turned in a fine performance under Jamie Spencer and as suspected the gap of 9 days between the Dante and this race was possibly a bit short for Too Darn Hot although he was brave in finishing second.  Third home was Decrypt 20/1 with Magna Grecia fading in the run.

Earlier the Greenlands did run according to script for the first two home in Mr Lupton and Speak In Colours, and the irrepressible 11yo Gordon Lord Byron ran a splendid third as our roughie at 20/1 – what a horse!

The Lanwades Stud G2 saw Willie Haggas’s Beshasyir 8/1 get the better of the favourite I Can Fly.  Red Tea was third.

On Sunday Magical was as usual magical in winning the Gold Cup by 7 lengths from Flag of Honour!  That’s how an odds-on horse should run.

Not odds-on but she should have been the lovely Hermosa won the Irish 1000 Guineas to add to her UK Title and will now probably take on the French. Pretty Pollyanna was second at 9/1 and Foxtrot Liv 25/1 third.
