Mare wins 60th Takarazuka Kinen

3 minute read

She is only the fourth female to win the race but the boys held no fears for Lys Gracieux who received a brilliant ride from Aussie jockey Damien Lane.

As they entered the straight he had her balanced, in an ideal position, and ready to charge which she did with style. When challenged by favourite Kiseki, she was able to find that bit extra and go on to win by 3 lengths ahead of Kiseki, with Suave Richard a further two lengths back in third.  Al Ain was fourth and Rey de Oro looks like he needs his summer holidays coming in 5th.

Damian Lane got his second G1 and this followed on riding a 5-timer at Tokyo on Saturday.

Race caller Murray Johnston comments that "In his first 2 month contract which ends Sunday at Hanshin racecourse he has ridden 35 winners with the leading jockey on 73 winners.". This is a truly remarkable feat.

There was a very enthusiastic crowd on hand to witness the race, which is one of the two Grand Prix races where the fans get to vote for the first ten eligible runners.

The win also gives the winner an entry to the Breeders' Cup turf in October.
