Now that's a real upset

3 minute read

Sovereign, 33/1, wins the Irish Derby by 6 lengths.

Yes it was warm at the Curragh on Saturday but not stifling so you can't blame the weather.  Anthony Van Dyck either didn't get the trip or was not on song as he finished 6 lengths behind the upset winner, Sovereign, an Aidan O'Brien runner and this time the mount of Paddy Beggy.  Norway ran a better race to take third but that was 8 ½ lengths behind the winner.  Madhmoon was fourth and may drop back in trip and Broome blew the start and was never in it, finishing sixth.

Earlier favourite Addeebb was scratched from the G3 and the money then came for Joseph O'Brien's runner Buckhurst with Wayne Lordan riding.  Always pays to follow the money in Ireland.  Blenheim Palace and Georgeville followed for the minors.

The Railway Stakes G2 was a soft win for Siskin, who defeated Monarch of Egypt by 2 ½ lengths with Fort Myers a further 2 ¼ lengths back in third.
