While the Chiocciola led for most of the race, Giraffa was stalking.

Holding tightly to the heels of the leader, the Giraffa were able to pass in the last 100m under a great ride from Giovanni Atzeni.  We don't know if he's related to Andrea but it's possible and he certainly proved a good tactician as well as an accomplished horseman.

There are various clips of this race on You Tube and we recommend the one of the Carabinieri a Cavallo – the mounted police who ride around the ring quietly at first then they take out their swords and increase the pace to a full gallop!  Very scary if you are close to the action!
