Déjà vu at Goodwood

3 minute read

There was rain (a little) and wind (a lot) on Goodwood's opening day.

And two of the races were won who had won the same race last year and in one case the year before that as well.  Yes, Stradivarius was definitely in tune as he produced a great effort under Frankie Dettori to win his third Goodwood Cup.

Bridesmaids this time were Dee Ex Bee and Cross Counter although they were in close attendance after Wells Fargo had led them all a merry dance, which the jockeys of the first three home chose to ignore until that horse came back to the field and allowed them to go forward.

And there was Sir Dancealot winning the Lennox Stakes for the second year running for David Elsworth with Gerald Mossé riding.  They beat Hey Gaman by a length and then a further length back in third was Suedois.

The Vintage saw a great turn of foot from Pinatubo to win by 5 lengths from Positive 12/1 and Lope y Vega a further 5 lengths back in third.  James Doyle said of the winner that he popped him out at the top of the straight to have a look and the horse took off!  He's now favourite for next year's 2000 Guineas.

At Galway trainer Ado McGuiness had a good win with Saltonstall, 9/1, under Colin Keane.  It's likely that they will return on Sunday too.  Innamorare was second on 12/1 with Quizical second 16/1 and the raider Rufus King fourth, which paid out as there were 18 runners.
