Pacific Classic day at Del Mar

3 minute read

There was a good card at Del Mar on Saturday with five graded stakes races including two Gr 1s.

Starting with the Green Flash Gr 3 the win went to Mr Vargas 3/1 from favourite Eddie Haskell by 2 lengths with a further half length back to Stormy Liberal.

The Del Mar Handicap Gr 2 presented by the JRA also provided an upset winner in Acclimate 7/1 and an upset second in Oscar Dominguez 11/1 and an upset third in Ritzy AP on 11/1.  United was a non-runner and the other fancies horses were back in the pack.

The Torrey Pines restored the equilibrium somewhat when favourite Fighting Mad with Joe Talamo riding for Bob Baffert won by 8 lengths from a roughie Hollywood Hills 31/1 and third Into Chocolate 15/2.

The Del Mar Oaks justified the trip for Chad Brown's Cambier Parc who defeated Hidden Message 9/1 and Lady Prancelot 15/1.

But it was back to upsets for the Pacific Classic when Higher Power 10?1 won from Draft Pick 14/1 and Mongolian Groom 18/1.

Over at Saratoga Team Win didn't get a start in the Lake Placid so Varenka went off as 7/4 favourite and then a dead heat with Regal Glory was the result!

The Alabama went to the favourite and very good filly in Dunbar Road who finished 2 ¾ lengths ahead of Point of Honour with Street Band only a nose away in third under Sophie Doyle on her first time riding at Saratoga.
