Korean Internationals 2019

3 minute read

There are two races which have the local classification of G 1 – the Sprint and the Cup.

The Cup is over 1800m and has 11 runners, four of whom are raiders and the other seven locals.  Unfortunately there are no Japanese runners this year but the raiders are interesting and the top local horse – Dolkong – is also in the mix.

The American runner Lone Sailor has a rating of 112 and in the UK is on 5/2.  He's got good form at the top level in the US and should have a great chance here especially coming out of gate 3.

We would be putting the local hero Dolkong next although the UK has him at 6/1, and they have the Holy Bull winner Harvey Wallbanger, rated 106, on 5/2.  Dolkong did well in Dubai but has had a change of trainer since then.  He'll be ridden by Park Tae Jong who is Korea's winningest jockey.

England's Ambassadorial comes from Jane Chapple-Hyam's yard (Jane herself is in New York with a runner at Belmont) who gets a 6/1 quote as well although Ambassadorial is a work in progress and could be a query at the trip in the sand.  Hong Kong's Glorious Artist comes off a rating of 92 and Frankie Lor and his team are really looking at this as being a learning trip.  16/1 in the UK.   Cheongdam Dokhi was fancied in this last year and finished fourth and is on 10/1 and New Legend has a rating of 105 as although Korean bred he's raced in the US and has a Cypriot jockey Ionnis Polluis.  Probably better than the 25/1 in the UK.

The Sprint has a cast of 16 and it will be interesting to see where the pace comes from.  The mare Holy Legal 10/1 is fast, has a rating of 108, and has gate 5 and Gaon Champ 14/1 is one of the top local sprinters with a rating of 104 and is in gate 6, with American Heartwood in 7 and on 7/1.  Heartwood is on a rating of 104.

The Hong Kong runner Ugly Warrior has won at home over this trip but the Sha Tin dirt is quite different to the Gwaechon sand.  He'll be happy to see a bit of rain which may come.

The local Blue Chipper has a rating of 107 having won in Busan recently by 10 lengths and he's fast.  He's drawn 13 so it will be interesting to see if they push forward or hold back.

Next to them in 11 is the English raider Pass The Vino, who is a nice 3yo who put in a sparkling bit of track work this morning.  Trainer Paul D'Arcy has booked the promising David Egan for the ride and they have a chance with the UK quote of 12/1 looking generous.  French raider Bakoel Koffie has a rating of 108 and is 10/1 in the UK.  He's looked very comfortable on the surface and they have booked top local jockey Antonio Davielson for the ride.

It's quite a tough race to sort out but we are probably going to include Blue Chipper, Ugly Warrior, Pass The Vino, Fast Pass and Bakoel Koffie and Holy Legal in the mix.
