Champions Day at Leopardstown

3 minute read

There are 5 Group races at Leopardstown with the G1 Irish Champions Stakes the feature.

We start off with the KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes G2 over 1600m for the 2yos.  7 will line up with Japan's brother Mogul looking the go for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore but 2/5?  Sinawann is value at 6/1 for Halford-Whelan and if you want to try a roughie Mogul's stablemate Cormorant is on 14/1 with Seamie Heffernan in the irons.

The Paddy Power Betting Shop Stakes is G3 for 3y+ over 2400m with 9 runners.  Buckhurst, owned by Lloyd Williams and trained by Joseph O'Brien is on 2/1, Aidan's Mount Everest is 5/2 and Jessica Harrington's Leo de Fury 7/2.  Could be a really good race.

Now for the Champions – Magical should be delighted there is no Enable in this race to spoil her parade so she's 7/4.  English raiders Elarqam and Headman are on 3/1, and from Japan we have Deidre, who won the Nassau stakes and has delighted all with the pictures of her being fed bananas!  If you can get 8/1 go for it!

The Boomerang Stakes is G2 over 1600m for 3y+ and here we have the unbeaten 3yo Lancaster House for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore who looks the best runner here and has the weight allowance.  Suedois is consistent although doesn't find the line all that often so 3/1 could be a bit skinny and we would be tempted to go for Mick Halford's Surrounding on 10/1.

The Matron is the other G1 on the card over 1600m and here we see the lovely Laurens on 11/8 with Hermosa 5/2.  You have to take it on trust that Hermosa's last run did not mean she was off the boil and hope that she is back to her best.
