The world's oldest classic

3 minute read

The St Leger has been run for 243 years and this year's edition is on at Doncaster on Saturday.

There's a couple of G2s on the card as well staring with the Park Stakes over 1400m for the 3y+ runners with only 6 lining up here.  Shine So Bright won at York and is on 11/8 and Turjomaan is down in trip and is on 5/2.

The Champagne Stakes is also 1400m for the 2yo c&g and only 5 in this so it looks like the coast is clear for Threat to add this to the Gimcrack although no value here as he's 11/10 and most likely rival Royal Crusade is 11/4 for Appleby-Buick.

The St Leger itself is over 2800m and has 8 runners headed by the unbeaten Logician who is evens for Gosden-Dettori.  The Irish invade with Sir Dragonet, the Chester Vase winner, who is 9/4 for the O'Briens Aidan and Donnacha and Il Paradiso is on 7/1.

Yesterday there was a big upset at the start of the day when Breathtaking Look took out te Sceptre Stakes at 20/1 followed by Preening 14/1 and Mot Juste 8/1.  The more fancied runners are possibly still running.

Stradivarius was much too good for the others in the Doncaster Cup especially as Dee Ex Bee had been scratched because of the going.  Cleonte was second and dear old Max Dynamite picked up a nice cheque for third although there wasn't a third dividend.

A'Ali came back to form in the Flying Childers and didn't seem to mind the fast ground winning from Dream Shot 20/1 and Wheels On Fire 12/1.
