Quite a weekend in America

3 minute read

Particularly in Keeneland where there was a welcome number of turf races in their festival.

Friday started with the Phoenix on the dirt which went to Asmussen and Jose Ortiz with Engage with Whitmore second.  The Alcibiades, also on dirt, went to British Idiom in a runaway with the next best Perfect Alibi 6 ½ lengths behind.

Saturdzy's races started with the Woodford on turf which saw hot favourite Imprimus unable to better either Stubbins 8/1 or Leinster.  The Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes went to Spiced Perfection for Peter Miller- Javier Castellano who got the head in front of Dawn The Destroyer.

The First Lady on the turf went to Uni, who started off her career in France until moving to Chad Brown two years ago.  Her more-fancied stablemate Rushing Fall had to settle for fourth.

Maxfield was a surprise winner of the Claiborne Breeders Futurity defeating favourite Gouveneur Morris by 5 ½ lengths.  And a further upset in the Shadwell Turf Mile when Bowies Hero 8/1 defeated Diamond Oops 12/1 (who had been scratched from the Phoenix in order to run in this) by ¾ length and a decent run from Suedois in third.

Belmont hosted the Hill Prince on turf which went to Neptune's Storm 10/1 from A Thread of Blue.  The Joe Hirsch Classic saw Arklow win from Channel Maker.  It looks like Ya Primo has still not adjusted to US life.  No surprises in the Champagne which saw Tiz The Law get in just in front of Green Light Go, with the two sharing favouritism.

On Sunday Sister Charlie handled the turf and her odds-on quote to win the Flower Bowl from Mrs Sippy and the Argentinian-bred Blue Prize won the Frizette by ½ length from odds-on favourite Elate.

Upsets in California where Time Valour got the City of Hope at 17/1 by a head from Restrainedvengence 44/1.  The Sprint Champs saw Omaha Beach just get the head in front of Shancelot.
