Champions Day at Ascot

3 minute read

This meeting (or most of it) used to be held in September when the weather was usually a bit better.

This year they have had to move three of the races to the inner (hurdle) track – the Fillies and Mares, the Long Distance Cup and the Champion Stakes.  The going is probably good>soft, soft in places.  The other races will come down the straight with the going expected to be heavy.

The Sprint is G1 over 1200m with 17 still in.  It's very open however Advertise leads the market on 5/1 with Hello Youmzain on 11/2, Make A Challenge 6/1 and do not forget The Tin Man on 10/1 – the 7yo is such a trier.

The Long Distance Cup has Stradivarius odds-on BUT John Gosden has said he will walk the course on Saturday morning before making a final decision, but the move to the inner track may make that decision a bit easier.  Kew Gardens is next best on 9/2, Royal Line 6/1 and dear old Max Dynamite is worth a few bob e/w at 33/1.

The Queen Elizabeth II is G1 over the straight mile and French raider The Revenant is favourite on 5/2 with Arc-winning jockey PC Boudot in the irons for Francis Graffard.   Very close between Godolphin's Benbatl and Coolmore's Magna Grecia on 6/1 for next best and Lord Glitters comes in on 7/1.  16 run.

The Champion Stakes G1 over 2000m has a field of 12.  Magical is going for this (having been entered in the F&M as well) and is on 13/8.  Addeybb is 3/1 and Coronet 7/2.  And then there is Deidre on 10/1.  The Japanese mare will be happier with the going on the inner track and connections have opted to give her another run here rather than going to the Breeders' Cup in America.  She has been such a lovely horse and it is very generous of her connections to keep her in England to run here so we hope she does them proud.
