Breeders' Cup 2019 Day 1

3 minute read

Santa Anita seems fortunately to be untroubled by the wildfires raging around Los Angeles.

This first day of the meeting is designed to showcase the up and coming horses.

Although not in the "Marathon" which is for 3y+ and run over 2800m.  There are only 6 runners and it looks between John Sadler's Campaign – odds-on in the Morning Line – and Jeff Mullins's Its In The Post on 5/2.

The BC Juvenile Turf Sprint is Gr 2 over 1000m and will have a full field of 12.  Favouritism is between Four Wheel Drive and Kimari at around 3/1.  Frankie Dettori will be on board A'Ali for Simon Crisford but they've got a bad draw and 4/1 could be generous.

The BC Juvenile Turf is over 1600m with 14 runners.  Aidan O'Brien has already won this race 5 times and sends Arizona to run with Ryan Moore to ride.  5/2 available. Local hopes are with Christophe Clement's Decorated Invader on 4/1.

The BC Juvenile Fillies is Gr 1 for the 2yos and over 1700m.  9 will run headed by the exciting Donna Veloce who lives up to her name.  Flavian Prat will ride.  Then there are three of them on 7/2 – Bast, British Idiom and Wicked Whisper.

The Juvenile Fillies Turf is Gr 1 and over 1600m.  We like Jessica Harrington's Albigna and provided she's travelled OK she has a very good chance and value at 9/2.  Shane Foley as usual in the irons.  Daahyeh is on 5/1 and Sweet Melania around the same mark.

The BC Juveniles Gr 1 over 1700m has 8 runners with Dennis' Moment on 6/4, Eight Rings on 11/8 and in a small field the Japanese runner Full Flat could be a bit better than the odds suggest.
