The crowd was about half of that of last year at the same meeting and turnover was down but there were no problems at or around the track.
This is reassuring with the Internationals coming up shortly.
The racing was exciting with some surprises too starting off in the Mile where Waikuku managed to outrun Beauty Generation who was arguably disappointing especially as he was passed by Ka Ying Star in the final strides. It leads one to ponder what will be the situation with the International Mile although Purton and Moore are saying that he will be better at level weights, but that was hardly the excuse this time. He just didn't dominate.
Which was what Exultant did in the Cup despite carrying top weight. He held the fort against the fast finishing Furore who put in a much better performance under Hugh Bowman who is going to return to Hong Kong to ride him on International Day. Southern Legend was third just head of the improving Rise High.
The Sprint didn't disappoint with Aethero putting in an excellent performance to win from the grey Hot King Prawn with Beat The Clock finishing third. Pingwu Spark was scratched at the barriers again which is a shame as he's a big horse and obviously has a problem with gates. And Pakistan Star – what can we say? He jumped out and that was it and that may be it for Pakistan Star in Hong Kong racing as the trainer was told to discuss his future with the owners!
