Barrier Draw and other notes from Doha

3 minute read

The feature for thoroughbreds is the H.H. The Amir Trophy, sponsored by Longines and over 2400.

It will be Race 7 in Saturday's 8 race card with the exciting news that there is an Australian interest in the race.  Mr Satchmo is owned by OTI in conjunction with a group of French owners and has drawn barrier 7.  Many of the French owners were also involved in Gailo Chop and both horses were/are under the care of Antoine de Wagrinant, who trains in the West of France.

While it would probably take the guillotine to stop French King who is going for his third win in the race, Mr Satchmo is coming into this on two recent wins in France and is pleasing connections with his work since arriving in Qatar.  Mikael Barzaona has the ride and will be following on from his treble yesterday.

In fact on Friday the jockeys were nearly all multiple winners – Barzalona with 3, Ronan Thomas and Soufiane Saadi both rode doubles and the sole jockey with a single winner was Harry Bentley.

Other horses to watch out for in the Amir Trophy are Pedro Caro, the Derby winner, Hunting Horn who  has been bought by Qatari interests, The Blue Eye and Royal Julius.

The Amir Sword is for Purebred Arabians and Ebraz will be a hot favourite here.  He's either won or come second in is latest races and Maxime Guyon, who has won on him previously, has the ride for trainer Julian Smart.

Other races of interest are the Dukhan Sprint with some European raiders here In the form of Gulliver from UK, Make A Challenge Ireland an Bokoel Koffie and Pretty Boy both from France.

The Al Biddah Mile has an interesting runner in the Archie Watson trained Maystar who will be ridden by Hollie Doyle, who has a particular affinity for the horse as she has ridden him in all his races.  They are expected to shine here with Happy Bere a possible challenger.

The H.H. The Amir Shalfa is over 200m on the turf with Pazeer, Seeyoubyme, Al Malhouf and Sam Langford expected to make a showing.
