Santa Anita Handicap day

3 minute read

The Big Cap was one of several graded stakes on Saturday.

Early favourite Gift Box was scratched and this was to benefit the stablemate Combatant who started at 9/1 but rose to the occasion and scored the win with Joel Rosatio, who was to have ridden Gift Box, on board.  Umberto Rispoli was down to ride Combatant but the stable jockey got the ride and Rispoli was fortunate that under the rules he was awarded the same payout as the winning jockey.  Multiplier ran a blinder for second and Midcourt got hampered in the straight and finished third.

Earlier the San Carlos went according to the market with Flagstaff defeating Roadster.

The Frank E Kilroe Mile went to River Boyne by a neck from Got Stormy with Next the third home.

The San Felipe saw Authentic on his way to the Kentucky Derby winning the race and the 50 points.  He won by 2 ¼ lengths from Honor AP (in the week in which AP Indy died) and another 3 ½ lengths to Storm the Court.

At Tampa Bay Downs Starship Jubilee showed her class in winning the Hillsborough from Beautiful Lover and 20/1 shot Kelsey's Cross third ahead of Magic Star.  Altea was a non runner and Juliana not in the mix.

The Florida Oaks went to Outburst, who had started her racing life in France and this was her second race in her new stable.  She went to the lead early but was able to settle in the middle stages and come home in the straight ahead of a fast-finishing Walk In Marrakesh with Secret Stash third.

King Guillermo's win in the Florida Derby was of great delight to the Venezuelans – his owner Victor Martinez was a very successful major league baseballer and his trainer and jockey also were Venezolanos.  He started at 49/1 and may go straight to the Kentucky Derby.  Favourite Sole Volante was second with Texas Swing third.
