Hong Kong Derby 2020

3 minute read

It's going to be one of the strangest Derbys ever without any cheering crowd.

The Derby is one of the highlights of the Hong Kong racing Calendar and it is for 4yos.

Very difficult to find a winner who has less than triple figures in the ratings and there are three who have that magic marker – Golden Sixty, the odds-on favourite on 112, Champion's Way at 10.0 on 108 and More Than This at 4.5 and on 107.

Golden Sixty ticks most of the boxes – he's unbeaten, been working a treat and his trainer and jockey combo of Francis Lui and Vincent Ho have been enjoying a stellar season.  However there is a "but" here and part of that is the trip and second is the price – odds-on in G1s have not got the best record.

So if you like a gamble go for Champion's Way with Joao Moreira riding for John Size.  There is a question mark at the trip although trainer thinks he can do it and Size's record speaks for itself.

More Than This has shortened in the market overnight and has many supporters.  There is now doubt he will be in the mix and having Zac Purton on board is a positive.

Our roughie here is the Brazilian bred Butterfield on 17.0. He's been coming along nicely and has a G1 from Brazil in is CV.

The last race is named for Rapper Dragon who won the 4yo Triple Crown in 2017.  It is quite an open race and it looks to be between Circuit Three on 4.9, Happy Fun on 5.5 and Star Shine on 7.3.
