Ghaiyyath too good in the 2000 Guineas

3 minute read

It looked as if William Buick just had to not fall off in order to win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Friday as Ghaiyyath went to the early lead and then just cruised through to win in course record time.

There was a good run from Anthony van Dyck second by 2 ½ lengths in a race which could be considered on the short side for him and Stradavarius was a similar margin back in third on his first run since October.  Broome was not disgraced in fourth.

There was an alcoholic finish to the second race when Tinto (Spanish for red wine) won at 40/1 and Pass The Vino was third – nice to see Pass The Vino whom we had seen in Seoul last year.

Saturday sees the glamour boy Pinaturbo step out in the 2000 Guineas.  As a 2yo he got the highest rating for 25 years and the word seems to be he is ready to continue his unbeaten record.  William Buick rides for Charlie Appleby.  He's of course odds-on and nearest rivals seem to be Arizona, by No Nay Never, with Ryan Moore riding for Aidan O'Brien and Kameko, a Kitten's Joy colt who should appreciate the fast going.   If you want a roughie Appleby's other runner Al Suhail is by Dubawi and should be shorter than 20/1.

There's also the G2 Dahlia stakes over 2000m with the Gosden-Dettori Terebellum heading the market on 11/8 with one of our favourite girls Magic Lily on 3/1 for Appleby-Buick and around the same mark is Queen Power from Sir Michael Stoute's yard.

Sunday it's the turn of the fillies in the 1000 Guineas and here Quadrilateral seems to be ticking most boxes.  Jason Watson rides for Roger Charlton and 9/4 is the quote.  Love is on 7/2 for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore, Millisle if she runs here will probably start on 5/1 and our roughie here is another Appleby runner – Summer Romance on 20/1.
