Locals upset raiders in Bahrain

3 minute read

The second edition of the Bahrain International Trophy has gone to the local rep Simsir.

The Zoffany product now with Fawzi Nass used to be with Mick Halford and under a top ride from Lee Newman managed to take the lead coming in to the straight and hold off the challengers.

Nass has only recently taken over the training of Sisir and Newman, a former UK Champion Apprentice who has been riding in Australia in recent times, has been in Bahrain of late and knows the track well.  He nearly did it last year but got run down on the line so this year he rated his horse perfectly and they scraped in.

Sovereign would have recouped his supplement fee by running third. John Gosden's Global Giant was second by a neck and Sovereign a nose away for the third.

The winner's stablemate Port Louis was fourth despite being more fancied than the winner who started at around 25/1 in the UK markets.  Fawzi Nass was delighted to win at home as he mostly has to travel his horses to get them into the big races.

Unfortunately no fairy tale ending for Deidre who finished 8th – she will return home to Japan and turn to her next career.
