It's going to be a bit of a different Carnival this year.
They have kept the prize money the same for the Dubai World Cup but the money for the other races on that night is down. We have felt for ages that the Dubai World Cup and the Sheema on turf should be on the same level (in fact you could argue for the dirt race to be lower than the turf one but that's for another day).
Getting things off on Thursday is the 1000 Guineas Trial over 1400m with 11 starters. Doug Watson saddles Super Chianti who won on debut and will start favourite in the UK (no betting in UAE) on 9/4 with Pat Dobbs in the irons. Godolphin runners are out in force – 5 of the 11 starters – with the two best probably being Soft Whisper from Saeed bin Suroor's yard and Pat Cosgrave riding – they are on 5/2, and Looktotherainbow for Charlie Appleby with William Buick riding on 3/1.
