That was the Preakness 2021

3 minute read

No triple crown this year as the Preakness went to outsider Rombauer.

Starting at 12/1 the Michael McCarty trained and Flavien Prat ridden son of Twirling Candy produced another withering finish to put paid to the field, led by the gallant Midnight Bourbon.  While Rombauer had not featured much in the previews all one had to do was to see his run in the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate when he came from the back of the field to take the race.  Medina Spirit had been up the front with Midnight Bourbon for most of the race but neither horse had the sprint finish of the winner and had to settle for the minors.

Keepmeinmind was fourth and Crowded Trade fifth.  France Go De Ina was 7th – he was up the front of the field for most of the race but ran out of gas towards the end, and may not have got the trip.  Concert Tour had a torrid race having to be wide and without cover for most of the race.

There were only 10 runners in the field so it was by no means a vintage edition of the race.

On Friday Army Wife performed her duty well in winning the Black-eyed Susan for Mike Maker and Joel Rosario starting on 9/2.  There was a gap of 2 ¾ lengths back to second finisher Willful Woman on 13/1 then 1 ¼ to Lady Traveler 18/1 and then 10 lengths to Forever Boss so not much point in writing about the rest of the field as they just weren't good enough.
