Upsets at Sandown – now to Haydock

3 minute read

While they were very small fields at Sandown the were big upsets in both G3s.

The Henry II saw Henry de Bromhead's Lismore win at 14/1 under Jamie Spencer, with Ranch Hand second and favourite Ocean Wind third in a 5 horse race.

The Brigadier Gerard went to Jim Goldie's Euchen Glen by 4 ¼ lengths to favourite Sangarius.  Euchen Glen had serious injury problems earlier In his career but seems to have bounced back and ran very well under Paul Mulrennen.

At Haydock on Saturday the ground may be drying a bit but it has been pretty soggy everywhere of late – record rainfalls for May – there are two more G3s.  The first of these is the Pinnacle Stakes for f&m over 2400m with 6 starters headed by Roger Varian's Cabaletta.  They are on 7/4 with David Egan riding.  We think Henry Candy's La Lune could have a chance too – she's on 11/4 with David Probert booked for the ride.

The John Of Gaunt wasn't run last year and the winner from 2019 Safe Voyage defends.  John Quinn trains and Jason Hunt will ride and reports are all is going well with the Haydock loving mare.  Haggas-Marquand combine here with With Thanks and we like her – she's on 7/2.  Appleby-Buick are with Glorious Journey who has done well abroad but this is first up for this prep and the aim is Ascot.  A sort-of roughie is Njord, a Jessica Harrington trained mare with Shane Foley in the irons and they are on 8/1.
