Rain, Snow and reign at Epsom

The forecast had mentioned scattered showers but that was an underestimate.

11mm of rain fell on Epsom in a deluge and changed the going from "good to firm" to "good to soft".

It was still pelting down when the 7 horses went to post for the Coronation Cup with 2400 soggy metres ahead of them.  It was Pyledriver who coped the best and returned to his best winning ways under Martin Dwyer for the relatively new training partnership of William Muir and Chris Grassock.  They were of course jubilant and they had beaten the favourite Al Aasy by a neck and denied him a first G1.  Japan was 7 lengths away in third and that more or less sums up the race.

And then it was the Oaks and the turn of Snowfall, a filly by Japanese super star and super sire Deep Impact.  It was a performance worthy of her sire as she easily tore through the field and the going to finish a record 16 lengths ahead of the rest.  For the record Mystery Angel was second on 50/1 and Divinely third on 20/1.  Frankie Dettori described the ride as a hot knife going through butter and feels that she can go on to bigger and better things leading this year to the Arc.

The win also saw Aidan O'Brien equal John Scott's record of 40 wins in the English Classics.  And for the record Santa Barbara finished fifth and O'Brien will now drop her back in trip to 2000m.

So Snowfall now reigns over Epsom – what a performance.
