The Coronation Stakes

THE CORONATION STAKES - G1 Mile Round Course

Ascot’s fillies semi-classic offers the girls a chance to shine. Commemorating the coronation of Queen Victoria, it often brings together the form from the English, Irish and French 1000 Guineas winners. Which country’s lead up will be the stronger here?

PROFILING THE RACE OVER RECENT YEARS

o As mentioned, coming after the European 1000 Guineas races, it’s almost the championship race.

o The race has been spread around most of the major yards although Godolphin has missed out on this one for a while.

o Since 1980, Sir Michael Stoute has the most recent wins with four.

o Plenty of upsets in this race, not big prices but favourites have missed out.

o Winner’s Lead Up Races - 1000 Guineas (4), Irish 1000 Guineas (3), Epsom Oaks (1), Prix de Sandringham (1), Chartwell Fillies Stks (1)

RECENT WINNERS

2012 - FALLEN FOR YOU 3f (Dansili x Fallen Star) (12-1)

Jockey: William Buick, Trainer: John Gosden

Barrier: 11, Weight: 57.0kg, Gross Time: 1:42.95

Margin: 3.5L, Track: Slow, Starters: 10

2nd: Starscope (57.0kg), 3rd: Irish History (57.0kg)

Review: On a wet end to the Ascot week, John Gosden was able to turn the filly around. She was not able to get into the finish of the Lingfield lead up race on the All Weather. But six weeks later she was primed and the conditions suited. She settled second last in a good gallop and had to make up plenty of ground. Pulling widest she rounded them up and charged away with the prize from the stablemate Starscope in a great week for Gosden and Buick.

2011 - IMMORTAL VERSE 3f (Pivotal x Side Of Paradise) (8-1)

Jockey: Gerald Mosse, Trainer: Robert Collet

Barrier: 11, Weight: 57.0kg, Gross Time: 1:42.75

Margin: 2.5L, Track: Dead, Starters: 12

2nd: Nova Hawk (57.0kg), 3rd: Barefoot Lady (57.0kg)

Review: The French came to town and walked away with the quinella. Immortal Verse missed the 1000 Guineas after playing up in the stalls at Newmarket but things were different here. They walked in this race and yet that quinella came from last and second last. Still there at the two furlong mark, she rounded them up unimpeded and won easily as the second filly had to make her way through the field.

2010 - LILLIE LANGTRY 3f (Danehill Dancer x Hoity Toity) (7-2 fav)

Jockey: John Murtagh, Trainer: Aidan O’Brien

Barrier: 11, Weight: 57.0kg, Gross Time: 1:39.69

Margin: 1.25L, Track: Good, Starters: 13

2nd: Gile Na Greine (57.0kg), 3rd: Jacqueline Quest (57.0kg)

Review: Lillie Langtry was a good 2yo and they aimed her first up as a 3yo in the Irish 1000 Guineas but while close was unable to find the placings. Ascot went far more to plan. Murtagh settled her beautifully midfield on the fence. She only needed luck in the run home after travelling so well. The run came before the turn and she unleashed. It did take a while to gun the leader down but she got there on the line.
