TATTS TIARA - G1 1350m

Since its elevation to G1 status in 2007, the Winter Stks (or Tatt's Tiara as it is now known) has been an important target for mare owners.

Run as the last G1 of the season, it has previously been taken out by some highly regarded ladies including Miss Potential, Porto Roca, Bonanova twice, Dane Ripper, Mamzelle Pedrille and Melito.

Which gal can gain that critical G1 to conclude the season?

RECENT WINNERS

2017 - TYCOON TARA 6m (Written Tycoon x Mosstara) ($21)

Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy, Trainer: Peter & Paul Snowden

Barrier: 3, Weight: 57.0kg, Gross Time: 1:19.37

Margin: 0.2L, Track: Good (4), Starters: 16

2nd: Prompt Response (55.5kg), 3rd: In Her Time (57.0kg)

Review: Some horses get to go out on top. For a mare winning a G1, it can’t get any better. Kerrin McEvoy had had a superb season and this was just another example with a great front running ride.

When the favourite In Her Time missed the start it played into McEvoy’s hands. Going on the point of the bend, Tycoon Tara established the winning break and despite getting tired late did enough.

Others had excuses but the winner needed none. The Snowdens can get a good horse going too.

2016 - MISS COVER GIRL 4m (Monashee Mountain x Tolart) ($21)

Jockey: Damian Browne, Trainer: Kelly Schweida

Barrier: 9, Weight: 57.0kg, Gross Time: 1:24.90

Margin: 1L, Track: Slow (5), Starters: 15

2nd: Azkadellia (57.0kg), 3rd: Sultry Feeling (57.0kg)

Review: This was an interesting race. Hardly a satisfying result bar for the connections or anyone who backed her it must be said. The new Eagle Farm track was not working well and they were heading wide into the straight.

Hence horses drawing inside were not fancied. Browne had the mare midfield but coursing wide. She had decent form but hardly outstanding so luck was needed and when she found the outside fence first that occurred.

She stole a break at the 200m and staved off the fast finishing Azkadellia who was no hope back that far. A strange end to the G1 season.

2016 Tattersalls Tiara - Miss Cover Girl

2015 - SRIKANDI 4m (Dubawi x Raining) ($4.25 fav)

Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy, Trainer: Ciaron Maher

Barrier: 15, Weight: 57.0kg, Gross Time: 1:24.38

Margin: 1L, Track: Slow (6), Starters: 15

2nd: Avoid Lightning (57.0kg), 3rd: Lumosty (55.5kg)

Review: Dane Ripper did the Stradbroke/Winter Stks double before the second one was a G1 and hence didn’t have the quality of field to oppose. Srikandi did the double and from the front in both of them.

From the outside gate McEvoy eased her over to be outside lead and then worked to the front when it was surrendered. She rolled at her own leisure but coming to the turn she wound it up.

Dashing a couple in front she gave nothing a hope and despite Avoid Lightning running her usual tenacious self, she failed to run Srikandi down. The Melbourne mare remained unbeaten at Gold Coast with Victory Stakes and Silk Stocking wins.
