Carr’s filly off to a flyer

3 minute read

A DECISION to give well-bred three-year-old filly Queenborough Flyer plenty of time to mature is likely to pay big dividends, given the ease with which she dispensed with her rivals on debut in Launceston last Wednesday night.

Queenborough Flyer (Alpine Eagle-Silandro) debuted with an emphatic win in a three-year-old maiden over 1100 metres.

The Siggy Carr-trained and ridden filly was only fairly away from the gates, so Carr opted to ease her out to the rear and kept her three-wide with cover.

Approaching the home straight the filly was still near last and for a fleeting moment it appeared as if she might not gain a clear run, but when a gap appeared Queenborough Flyer shouldered her way clear, and she quickly put the result beyond doubt.

"I have to thank he owners for allowing me to take my time with this filly because she's probably had five preps leading up to here, but as we saw tonight, I think their patience is going to be rewarded," Carr said.

"This was her first time to the races, but she raced more like a horse that had had 100 starts.

"To be able to drop back and then peel out and take gaps at only her fist start suggests we could have something a bit special."

Queenborough Flyer ($2.40 into $1.70 fav) went on to defeat the John Blacker-trained Dawn Eagle by a half-length with her stablemate Power Magnum almost a length astern

Carr said she will target three-year-old races for the filly going forward with the $100,000 3YO Cup in early December a possible option.

Alpine Eagle sired the runner-up Dawn Eagle as well as fourth and fifth-placed Chosen Eagle and Alpine Blast.
