Tamerlane isn't the easiest horse to train but Godolphin's perseverance with the three-year-old is paying off after he posted his first Saturday metropolitan victory at Randwick.

Assistant trainer Darren Beadman says the horse is brimming with talent but takes a lot of management, both on the training track and race day.

Hugh Bowman produced a perfectly judged ride at Randwick, allowing the gelding to find his feet early before bringing him with a sweeping run down the centre of the track to take out the ATC Thank You Stable Staff Handicap (1300m).

"It took all of Hughie's skill and precision to get him home," Beadman said.

"He's not the easiest horse to ride but he's got prior knowledge of the horse and when he won on him at Gosford first-up he was able to settle back off a fast speed with similar instructions today.

"He's got a lot of substance to him. He's a big, thick-set, heavy boned type of horse and if you can ride him in that manner, he's got another string to his bow.

"The team that work at home at Osborne Park with him do a tremendous job on the track to stabilise his energy."

Tamerlane ($8.50) scored by a long neck over Selburose ($11) with leader Vreneli ($6.50) holding on for third, another three-quarters of a length in arrears.

Skedaddle was sent out a $2.50 favourite but after drifting back in the field he was unable to sprint with the winner.

Bowman had partnered Tamerlane at his first two campaign runs, including to a first-up win at Gosford in May, and felt the horse had made significant inroads.

"He's really learned what the game is about," Bowman said.

"When I won on him at Gosford, he really didn't know what was going on, but he's come a long way in a short time. If anything, he's wanting to overdo it.

"The good pace up front allowed him to get into a nice rhythm towards the back and he showed what he can do the last furlong."
