3 minute read

Sydney trainer Tony Karakatsanis is hoping the weather doesn’t derail his bid to win his second Coonabarabran Gold Cup in three years on Monday.

The popular trainer is keen to run the topweight Yiasou Sydney but says the weather will determine if the five-year-old makes the trip from his Sydney stable.

""He's likely to go unless they get too much rain," Karakatsanis said.

"He's weighted right up but the main thing is the state of the track."

Coonabarabran has been a happy hunting ground for Karakatsanis as he enjoyed a big day in 2002 when he won the Coonabarabran Cup with Conjuror and the feature sprint.

"I love the people up there - it's a great little carnival," he said.

Yiasou Sydney will be opposed by last year's Cup winner Marfoo Star with only half a kilogramn between them.

Marfoo Star is trained by Debbie Prosser, who also won the Cup in 1999 with Just Charlie.

Dubbo pair Mike Williams and Mark Jones are other previous winning trainers looking to add to their score in the Coonabarbran Cup.

Jones won successive Cups in 1997 and 1998 with Raahtu and Royal D'Or while

Williams won the 2001 Cup with Bitcede.

Jones is starting Black Watch this year while Williams is returning with the evergreen Bitcede.

A number of runners coming from leading Tamworth and Hunter Valley stables

They include Tamworth gelding Night Call (Mark Mason), Scone-trained The Ark (Bill Farrow) and Sir Redford from Mack Griffth's Muswellbrook stable.

Coonamble Cup winner Walk The Beat goes up 2kg in a bid to complete the local Cups double.

He had 53kg at Coonamble but will carry 55kg in the Coonabarabran Cup.
