BERRIGAN: Honeychurch Reunion At Twilight Meeting

3 minute read

Berrigan's twilight TAB meeting on January 16 will be a huge day for the famous Honeychurch racing family.

Berrigan Race Club already honours legendary trainer Bert Honeychurch at the meeting, but will take it a step further next month when it stages a reunion for all people who have been associated with him and his stable.

The club is hoping many of his former stable owners and employees will be in attendance.

Honeychurch was the leading trainer in the southern and border districts of NSW for many years.

He trained many fine gallopers including Myzami, Maritana, dual Wagga Cup winner Double Cop and Gamut, who won 43 races.

Myzami raced in the early 1960s when he competed against the likes of Tulloch, Lord, Illumquh and Dhaulagiri were also going around.

Myzami ran third to llumquh in the Williamtown Cup in 1960, third behind Sky High in the 1960 Victoria Derby and was runner-up to Reinsman in the 1961 VRC St Leger.

His son Chris Honeychurch carried on the tradition as a successful trainer, enjoying great success with the top class stayer Allez Bijou.

As well as being a leading trainer, Bert Honeychurch was also mentor to several leading apprentices including David Heywood, Geoff Duryea and Bob Beasley , father of current leading Sydney jockey Danny Beasley.

Heywood, a leading Wagga trainer for many years, is hoping many people attend the reunion.

I was with Bert from 11 years of age and completed my apprenticeship with him,” Heywood said. “It is a wonderful idea the club has come up with.”
