Local hope in Goulburn Cup

3 minute read

HE is as close as we have got to a local chance in the Goulburn City Cup, and if Give Way can produce a repeat of its Bong Bong Cup (1600m) victory things will be rosy.

Give Way, trained in Berrima by Graeme Spackman, but trained on the Goulburn track is a lightweight chance in the Cup, but Spackman believes it could produce the goods.

Give Way's last start was in the Goulburn City Cup Prelude (1300m) back on January 30 where it ran a respectable fifth behind fellow Cup contender Regal Hawk.

"He has been training really well and is looking fresh and well," Spackman said.

"The fifth in the Cup Prelude was a really good, but tough run. He was four and five wide the whole way.

"He is used to 1600m, it was the distance he won the Bong Bong Cup at, so that won't be a worry."

Give Way will be partnered by young apprentice Cliff Lai (a), in what will be their first race together.

"We will see how he jumps, but he normally jumps well and he will be on the pace," he said.

"A lot depends on the barrier draw. He used to ping really well and go flat out, but now he has lost a bit of that and some more ground will suit him.

"He way be suited to 2000m race, and that is something I am hoping to try out this preparation."

Spackman will have a busy Carnival with eight horses running over the two days. One of his more promising include maiden Bakers Lass.
