Collier Hill out of Melbourne Cup

Irish St Leger winner Collier Hill has been ruled out of the Melbourne Cup due to the recurrence of an arthritic problem.

Irish St Leger winner Collier Hill has been ruled out of the Melbourne Cup due to the recurrence of an arthritic problem.

Trainer Alan Swinbank told the Racing Post the problem had flared up in a joint over recent days following his win over The Whistling Teal and Vinnie Roe in the Irish classic at The Curragh.

"While it's disappointing our adventure to Australia is off this time, and we'll have to wait for another year, it's impossible to be too disappointed about a horse who has won so much for us around Europe and beyond," Swinbank said.

"Over the years he has been troubled on and off by arthritis in his joints. Well just have to sit and wait for things to come right again."

Collier Hill recorded his first Group One victory when he denied Vinnie Roe a fifth St Leger victory.

Meanwhile Vinnie Roe is in quarantine with Racing Victoria's Stephen Allanson due to speak with trainer Dermot Weld to confirm whether the horse will be coming for a third attempt at the Cup.

Vinnie Roe finished forth to stablemate Media Puzzle in 2002 and was runner-up to Makybe Diva last year.
