Former Sydney star Red Hannigam, a placegetter in the 2001 Golden Slipper Stakes, has won the $70,000 Broome Cup in Western Australia as a nine-year-old.
Red Hannigan, who was formerly trained in Sydney by Gai Waterhouse, is now with his sixth trainer Sean Casey.
The veteran was having his fifth start for Casey, having come a long way from his early days when he earned a special place in Golden Slipper history as he was one of the three youngsters that gave Waterhouse the Golden Slipper trifecta in 2001.
He finished third behind stablemates Ha Ha and Excellerator.
Red Hannigan carried 61kg to record his 11th career win in th Broome Cup and trake his earnings to almost $700,000.
Casey and winning jockey Tim Stubberfield completed a winning double at the Cup meeting with Call Me Henry, another former Sydney cast-off from the Waterhouse stable.
