Chinchilla Rose trial excites Wells

Chinchilla Rose has tuned up for her Winter Stakes assignment with a barrier trial win at Doomben earning a glowing report from race rider Peter Wells.

Wells made a hit and run visit to Brisbane from Sydney to ride the mare in the trial, then returned to fulfil his engagements at the Canterbury meeting.

Chinchilla Rose missed the Eye Liner Stakes on Saturday due to fears she would have too hard a run from a wide barrier just a week before the last Group One of the season at Eagle Farm.

"She won her trial on the bit and felt good," Wells said.

"A this stage it's all systems go for her to run on Saturday.

"I'm very happy to be riding her. She's the sort of horse who can pop up in a good race."

At her most recent start, Chinchilla Rose won the Group Three Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on a slow track with Craig Williams aboard.

The weight-for-age Winter Stakes (1400m) for fillies and mares attracted 24 nominations but the prospect of rain over the next few days has put the participation of star filly Ortensia and triple Group One winner Forensics in doubt.

Forensics has yet to start in Queensland due to wet tracks and has not raced since finishing unplaced in the All Aged Stakes at Randwick on Anzac Day.

Russeting, a new acquisition for the Bart Cummings stable, is set to take her place following her fourth in the Dane Ripper.

Formerly trained at Toowoomba by Don Baker, Russeting was sold at the recent Magic Millions broodmare sale at the Gold Coast and sent to Cummings.

"From what I've seen of her, I think she's capable of being prominent in the finish," Cummings said.

Prior to the Dane Ripper, Russeting ran third to Ortensia in the Listed Glenlogan Park Stud Stakes.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
