The tireless nine-year-old gelding, trained at Muswellbrook by Jeff Englebrecht, proved he retains a great zest for racing when he reversed the result of the recent Dubbo Cup in the $30,000 Coonamble Cup.

Tora Tora Tora had beaten Newton's Rings into second place in the Dubbo Cup but this time the former Victorian gelding could not run down the Muswellbrook marvel.

Having his 76th start, Newton's Ring gave emerging apprentice Hari Singh an important win after a double at Quirindi on Saturday.

“He's a good old bloke,” Englebrecht said of his favourite horse.

“It was a good dry track and they played into his hands by not having a real fast pace.

Englebrecht said there was still plenty of racing in Newton's Rings with his hometown Muswellbrook early next month a possible target.

“He might have a few days off again like he did after his hard run at Dubbo,” Englebrecht said.

“He might have a crack at the Muswellbrook Cup. I'll think about that but he will have to have another run somewhere before that.

“Maybe we will go to Sydney with him but I don't know yet. We'll have to have a look around.”

Scone trainer Greg Bennett notched a double with Yahiguru and Manipulated, both ridden by Dale Spriggs.

Spriggs also partnered Walgett-trained Esprit Lad to a nose victory over Dance Arena in the feature sprint.
