Second Attempt For Bombala

3 minute read

After inclement weather and the state of the track forced the postponement of the Bombala meeting last Saturday, several Canberra trainers will back-up and make the trip for the five race card tomorrow.

Dubbed the Baroness of Bombala, Barbara Joseph was delighted with the decision to reschedule the meeting and credited the club and Racing NSW for the fast action taken to have the meeting run the following week.

“It's a great little meeting at Bombala and definitely would have been a shame if it wasn't run at all after the terrible weather we had,” Joseph said.

“In the end it has all worked out and basically the fields are pretty much the same as the original and the track and conditions are perfect now that the weather has turned.”

Joseph will go into the meeting with three runners that she believes all have winning chances with talented sprinter Follow The Command her best hope running in the $8,000 Bombala Cup 1200m.

“I've given him two runs back off a good spell and he needed the run first-up before he ran a top race last time at Cootamundra,” she said.

“Paul and I have set him for this race and he is jumping out of his skin and should be hard to catch around Bombala from the good barrier.”

Joseph is also bullish about the chances of maiden performer Short Term Trader who was spotted making good late ground in a strong maiden at Canberra on debut last time.

“The form around that maiden is pretty strong and he will be much better for the run and draws perfectly in barrier 1,” Joseph said.

“He had trialed ok before we sent him for a spell but he has come back a better horse and it doesn't appear an overly strong field tomorrow.”

Will Pearson will partner the two above mentioned horses with newcomer Kayla Nisbet taking the ride aboard Joseph's third runner Lu's Silk.

Joseph had originally booked stable apprentice Jason Collins for the mounts but after the in form hoop was suspended at Queanbeyan she was forced to chase other options after the meeting was rescheduled.

“It's a bugger Jason couldn't ride but I was lucky to get Will for two and had no problems with giving young Kayla a chance,” she said.

“Lu's Silk's form looks average but she is much better than that and has been pretty unlucky in a couple of her runs and with the claim will have no weight and can run a race.”

Nisbet will team up with fellow Canberra trainer Trevor McIlrick aboard top chance Billy aswell as maidener Beningbra in search for her first career winner with Nick Olive and Mark Schmetzer also representing Canberra at the meeting.
